Caring for Loved Ones During the Holiday Season
The holiday season can bring up unique challenges for those affected by sexual violence. If you’re supporting a loved one, here are some practical ways to be there for them:
Respect Their Boundaries. Encourage them to share what feels comfortable, but don’t push. Be open to changing plans if they need space.
Offer Practical Support. Help with tasks that may feel overwhelming, like preparing meals, organizing gatherings, or offering quiet time together.
Check In Gently. Let them know you’re there without expecting them to talk. A simple “I’m here for you” can go a long way. Even a text may be enough to remind them they’re not alone.
Listen Without Judgement. Give them a safe space to share without offering advice unless they ask for it. Sometimes, just listening is the best support.
Educate Yourself. Understanding trauma and its impacts can help you provide empathetic support. It shows your commitment to their healing.
Every small act of care adds up. Being there, with patience and empathy, can make a significant difference. Your support is powerful and appreciated.
