February is Black History Month

In commemoration of Black History Month, we honor the strength of Black communities while also recognizing the unique challenges faced by Black survivors of sexual violence.

Our LinkedIn post here has more information and graphics you can share with your networks.

Did you know that 1 in 4 Black women will experience sexual violence in their lifetime, compared to 1 in 5 white women? And that for each Black woman who report rape, at least 15 don't?

These statistics highlight the disproportionate impact sexual violence has on Black women. Additionally, Black survivors face barriers such as:

  • Black women are less likely to report sexual violence than white women

    • According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, this stems from a combination of fear of not being believed, mistrust in law enforcement, and cultural stigma

  • Black survivors of sexual violence face unique barriers when accessing support

    • A survey by the Black Women's Blueprint revealed that nearly 40% of Black survivors experience racial discrimination, economic inequality, and a lack of culturally competent services.

At DARCC, we are committed to offering free, holistic, and culturally competent care for all survivors, especially Black women.
