DARCC Shares Holiday Gathering Tips

The holidays are a time to connect, but respecting consent and boundaries makes gatherings safer and more comfortable for everyone. Here are some ways to create an inclusive and respectful environment this season:

  1. Ask Before Physical Contact: Instead of assuming hugs or other contact are welcome, try asking, “Would you like a hug?” Respect any response with understanding.

  2. Honor Boundaries Without Pressure: If someone chooses to skip a gathering, avoid activities, or step out for a moment, respect their choice. No need for questions or convincing.

  3. Provide a Quiet Space: Holidays can feel overwhelming. Offer a calm, quiet area where guests can step away if they need a break.

  4. Be Mindful of Personal Topics: Avoid conversations that could be intrusive or uncomfortable. Focus on positive topics that everyone can engage in comfortably.

  5. Avoid Alcohol Pressure: Respect everyone’s choice to drink or abstain. For some, this is key to maintaining a sense of control and safety in social settings.

  6. Model Consent with Kids: Encourage children to express affection in ways they feel comfortable, whether it’s a wave, high-five, or simply saying, “Hello.”

  7. Listen Without Judgment: If someone shares something personal, listen openly without offering advice unless asked. Just being present can mean a lot.

  8. Get Permission for Photos: Respect privacy by asking before taking or posting photos. Some may prefer to keep gatherings off social media.

This season, let’s create welcoming spaces where everyone can enjoy the season without pressure or discomfort.  Every action counts in creating a supportive space.
