Intensive Care Counselor

Job Title: Intensive Care Counselor
Department: Clinical
Reports To:
Clinical Director
FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Overview:
The Intensive Care Counselor at Dallas Area Rape Crisis Center (DARCC) is responsible for delivering specialized therapeutic services to survivors of sexual violence who require more intensive or specialized treatment and support than what can be provided in a standard outpatient setting, but whose condition does not necessitate immediate hospitalization or partial hospitalization for safety or stabilization reasons. These clients may have complex or severe co-occurring mental health challenges, significant functional impairments, and/or high-risk behaviors that require structured interventions and close monitoring. Examples of such challenges may include suicide ideation, self-harm, substance misuse, high levels of dissociation, and other related concerns that can occur in the aftermath of interpersonal violence. This position involves providing comprehensive assessment, individualized treatment planning, and evidence-based therapy to address the complex needs of survivors enrolled in DARCC counseling.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Comprehensive Assessment: Conduct thorough assessments to evaluate the mental health and psychosocial needs of clients with complex concerns related to their experiences of sexual violence. Identify risk factors, protective factors, and treatment goals to inform individualized treatment planning.
  • Individualized Treatment Planning: Develop and implement personalized treatment plans in collaboration with clients, addressing their unique needs, preferences, strengths, and goals. Integrate evidence-based therapeutic modalities, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and trauma-focused therapies, to provide holistic care.
  • Crisis Intervention and Safety Planning: Offer immediate crisis intervention and support to clients experiencing acute distress, suicidal ideation, or other urgent concerns. Collaborate with clients to develop safety plans and connect them with appropriate resources and support systems to mitigate risk.
  • Individual Counseling Facilitation: Offer individual counseling sessions multiple times per week to address the complex needs of clients. Empower clients with tools and strategies to manage symptoms and enhance resilience.
  • Group Therapy Facilitation: Lead specialized, trauma-informed group therapy sessions tailored to the needs of clients with complex concerns. Create a supportive and therapeutic environment conducive to healing and growth, focusing on topics relevant to clients with complex concerns, such as emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and self-care practices.
  • Coordinate External Resources: Facilitate referrals to and collaborate with external providers and community resources as needed to address clients' comprehensive needs.
  • Engagement of loved ones: Collaborate with family members and loved ones as indicated, which may involve providing psychoeducation about trauma responses and community services, conducting family support sessions, engaging in collaborative safety planning, and delivering other services directly benefiting the client.
  • Interdisciplinary Team Collaboration: Collaborate with the direct services team, including DARCC counselors and advocates, to ensure cohesive and integrated care for clients.
  • Supervisory Engagement: Participate in weekly individual and group supervision sessions with the Clinical Director and the Clinical Team.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate and up-to-date client records, treatment plans, progress notes, and other documentation in compliance with organizational policies and legal requirements.
  • Professional Development: Stay informed about current research, best practices, and emerging trends in the treatment of trauma, mental health, and co-occurring concerns. Participate in ongoing training, supervision, and professional development activities to enhance clinical skills and cultural humility.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in counseling, social work, psychology, or a related field.
  • Independent license as a mental health professional (LPC, LCSW, or LMFT) in the state of Texas. Not accepting associate-level or LMSWs for this role.
  • Passion for providing strengths-based, trauma-informed therapy to survivors of sexual violence.
  • Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience in an intensive outpatient program, partial hospitalization program, inpatient program, and/or Full Service Partnership (FSP) working with individuals with co-occurring mental health concerns and complex needs.
  • Strong crisis intervention skills and experience working with clients experiencing suicidal ideation, self-harm, dissociation, and other complex trauma presentations.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Commitment to cultural humility in all aspects of service delivery.
  • Strong distress tolerance skills and a demonstrated commitment to balancing self-care practices with client needs.
  • Complete DARCC Sexual Assault Advocate training within 6 months of hire date.

Job Specifics:

  • Work Setting: Hybrid virtual and remote schedule, at least 2 days in office a week.
  • Schedule: M-F schedule, M-Th 9-5, F 9-3, with flexibility to work some evenings and/or a weekend day to accommodate program schedules and client needs.
